Course Description:

Join Rachel Corry of Rachel Sees Snail Shoes for two days of Sandalmaking!

We'll be spending about 4 hours each day making unique sandals totally custom built for your feet. Rachel will bring many leather colors to choose from. Choose one or more for your 'uppers' and another thick leather for your footbeds. For the outsole (bottom), you can choose whether you’d like a leather-sole + stacked leather heel or rubber soles.

On the first day we’ll customize trusted patterns to suit your feet and design preferences. Then we’ll trace the patterns onto leather and assemble them according to the best fit. We'll also shape your outsoles with lift at the arch and toes and let these harden overnight.

During the second day we’ll scratch, glue, and hammer the shoes together. Attach the upper layers to the outsoles, and add nails to secure each connection point. Finally we'll work on the finishing touches: lace holes, hardware placement, each design is unique.

There is one last task before they are complete. Rachel asks you take your sandals to a cobbler/shoe repairman to have the edges sanded/finished. This is a simple task for cobblers and shouldn't cost more than $20 because they only need to remove material. This is also an opportunity to have the edges dyed to match the soles if you wish!

Be prepared to use utility knives, adhesive, hammers, wooden mallets, shoe anvils, and to get barefoot! Easy to slip on/off shoes are recommended.
